Passage: Ephesians 4:11-16

ALL SERMONS IN SERIES

Summary

Matthew 11:25-30 records six verses that are some of the most lovely and precious in all of God’s Word.  Jesus praises His Father in heaven for revealing Himself to those of His choosing. He rejoices that their fellowship is complete with each other and revealed to those whom the Son chooses. Therefore, Jesus calls to those who are weary and burdened to come to Him for He alone is able to give them rest for their souls because He will carry their sin and give them rest, both now and forever.

Transcript

Matthew 11:25-30 “Rest for Your Souls.”

25 At that time Jesus said,

“I praise You, Father,

Lord of heaven and earth, because

You have hidden these things from

the wise and learned, and

revealed them to little children.

26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

27 All things have been committed to me by My Father.

No one knows the Son except the Father, and

no one knows the Father except the Son and

those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

28 “Come to Me,

all you who are weary and burdened, and

I will give you rest.

29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for

I am gentle and humble in heart, and

you will find rest for your souls.

30 For My yoke is easy and

My burden is light.”

2

“The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in

times of trouble. Those who know Your name will trust

You, for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek

You.” (Psalm 9:9,10)

“Let all those who seek the LORD rejoice and be glad in

You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, ‘The

LORD is magnified!’ But I am poor and needy; yet the LORD

thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer.

Do not delay, O my God.” (Psalm 40:16,17)

25 At that time Jesus said,

“I praise You, Father,

Lord of heaven and earth, because

You have hidden these things from

the wise and

learned, and

revealed them to

little children.

26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

  1. God Reveals Himself in Jesus to Those He Chooses.

-In the previous verses, there are people who are not rightly

recognizing John the Baptist’s nor Jesus’ calls for

repentance, so they are not turning from their sin. So, Jesus

pronounces judgment on them.

3

-Then Jesus praises the Father, Lord of heaven and earth

because He has hidden these things of God from those who

think they are wise and learned and can approach God by

their own ways.

-God reveals Himself to people of His own choosing.

-The Father has hidden His revelation from people who

think by their own actions, they can approach God on their

own. They don’t realize Who Jesus really is and how much

they absolutely need Him to be at peace and in fellowship with

God and free the guilt and punishment of sin against God.

-The Father has revealed Himself to little children, as Jesus

describes, which are people who know that they cannot

approach God on their own. “Little children” are simply

people who believe what God has said and trust Him as a

little children trust their parents. They know Who Jesus

really is and how much they absolutely need Him for all

things.

-God does not reveal Himself to you because you deserve it

for your good works or for your great accomplishments, but

because He chooses to love you in Jesus Christ.

The Pharisee and Tax Collector: (Luke 18:9-14)

To some who are confident of their own righteousness

and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

4

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and

the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stoop up and prayed

about himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men,

robbers, evildoers, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not

even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God,

have mercy on me, a sinner.

“I tell you that this Tax Collector, rather than the Pharisee,

went home being at peace with God. For everyone who

exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself

will be exalted.”

-You are never kept from God because of not being good

enough or smart enough. God cares for even the least of all

people. God reveals Himself to you because He chooses love

whom He desires in Jesus Christ’s righteousness.

27 All things have been committed to me by My Father.

No one knows the Son except the Father, and

no one knows the Father except the Son and

those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

  1. Knowing God in fellowship and love with salvation

from your sin comes only through Jesus Christ.

-Jesus refers to God the Father as My Father, not the Father.

This means that Jesus is equal to the Father and they know

each other fully as One God in three persons, God the Father,

5

God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, and as three persons

in one God.

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the

prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these

last days He has spoken to us by His Son, Whom He

appointed heir of all things, and through Whom He made

the universe.

The Son of God is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact

representation of His being, sustaining all things by His

powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins,

He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So,

He became as much superior to the angels as the name He

has inherited is superior to theirs.” (Hebrews 1:1-4)

-This is a real mystery for us to try and understand. But it is

none the less true that Jesus The Christ is the perfect

Mediator between God and His people because He is fully

divine and fully man.

-Jesus alone provides the way to God for you to be at peace

with Him, to know hope, joy, love, eternal life, and be free

from the judgment and guilt of sin, both now and forever.

“Jesus answered: Don’t you know Me, Philip, even after I

have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has

seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the

Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that

the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just My

own. Rather, it is the Father, living in Me, Who is doing His

6

work. Believe Me when I say that I am in the Father and the

Father is in Me; or at least believe on the evidence of the

miracles themselves.” (John 14:9-11)

-Without belonging to Jesus and Him loving you, there is no

fellowship with God and you are still in your sins without

hope in this world and eternally.

28 “Come to Me,

all you who are weary and burdened, and

I will give you rest.

29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for

I am gentle and humble in heart, and

you will find rest for your souls.

30 For My yoke is easy and

My burden is light.”

  1. Come to Jesus and He will give you rest for your soul.

-Coming to Jesus is not just for salvation from your sin and

being fit for heaven and free from hell.

It is also about your everyday life right now.

It is about knowing truth and righteousness.

It is about those times when you are weary and burdened.

It is about experiencing and being nurtured in divine love

that only Jesus can provide through His Holy Spirit.

It is about your relationships, your work, your heartaches,

your joys and your sorrows.

7

It is about living in hope because you are cared for with an

everlasting love in Jesus. Jesus says you should come to Him

and you will find rest, a rest He alone can provide.

-Jesus says you will find rest for your souls when you are

struggling, weary, and heavy laden by taking His yoke upon

you because He is gentle and humble in heart.

-Taking Jesus’ yoke upon you is having Him carry your load.

All of us, no matter how strong or weak we are, cannot carry

our load of sin, nor can we carry all the troubles and

challenges of this world. We need eternal and divine help.

-Jesus’ yoke is also one of teaching what is true, right and

good. Through the Holy Spirit, as Jesus promised, Followers

of Jesus are taught by His Word how to rightly live in this

world and about that for which we are to hope in eternity.

-The apostle Paul described it by saying, “To live in Jesus

Christ and to die is gain.” The fullness of your existence is

complete, now and eternally, in Jesus Christ, by taking His

yoke upon you.

-Jesus calls you to come to Him and find rest for your soul,

while at the same time He is coming to you through the

power of the Holy Spirit as His precious Holy Word is spoken

to you.

8

-If you know Jesus and follow Him, you are instrument in His

perfect care to speak His word to others, to pray for them

and care for others physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Then, as God desires, He brings to Jesus those whom He

chooses to everlastingly love in His perfect righteousness

revealed in Jesus Christ.

-Jesus was asked by Thomas, His disciple,

“Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we

know the way?” So, Jesus told Thomas,

“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to

the Father except through Me. If you really knew Me, you

would know My Father as well.” (Jn. 14:5-7)

Conclusion: These six verses are some of the most lovely

and precious in all of God’s Word. This passage is full of

comfort for you who are moved by God to come to Jesus for

the rest that He alone can provide. He alone gives you rest

for your souls.

If you have been trusting in Jesus’s righteousness for your

salvation and fellowship with God, and not upon your own

works, then please be encouraged as you are reminded of

the great gift it is to know God in Jesus Christ. Now run to

Him in all of your needs, each moment of every day.

If you do not know God’s hope, love, and peace in your life

through Jesus, then please answer Jesus’ call today to come

to Him by faith in His righteousness, you who are weary and

burdened and He will give you His rest for your souls.
