Series: Psalms for the Summer
Aging in the Lord
July 27, 2025 | Peter Rowan
Passage: Psalms 71:1-24
Summary
From our earliest moments in the womb through the final stages of life, we encounter challenges that test our faith and resilience. Psalm 71 provides a powerful framework for understanding these seasons, as David reflects on God's faithfulness throughout his entire life journey - from before birth through old age. Each life stage brings unique difficulties: prenatal and childhood development can be affected by numerous factors; adolescence brings identity struggles and complex social dynamics; young adulthood confronts us with major decisions about education, career, and relationships; marriage and parenting reveal our immaturity and need for growth; and aging presents physical limitations and losses of independence. The beauty of Scripture is its honesty about these challenges while affirming God's unwavering presence. David never suggests wearing rose-colored glasses but instead acknowledges difficulties while declaring God's faithfulness. The trials we face don't diminish God's reliability - they highlight it. Like Polycarp, who after 86 years of following Christ could confidently say, 'He has never wronged me,' we too can learn to embrace our current season, value multi-generational community, and articulate our faith authentically from our present perspective. Through every stage of life, God proves His reliability and love, teaching us unique lessons through both joys and difficulties.

Every summer Peter and an occasional guest speaker take us through the Psalms. Of the Psalms Luther said " the Psalter is a book of all the saints, and everyone, whatever his situation may be, finds psalms and words in it that fit his situation and apply to his case so exactly that it seems they were put in this way only for his sake..."
